The lecture aimed to provide valuable insights to a diverse audience, including avid library users and society at large.

In his thought-provoking discourse, Professor Ge emphasized the inherently individual nature of reading, highlighting its lack of universal standards or prescribed methodologies. He astutely acknowledged the considerable variations in reading preferences and approaches among individuals. However, he also posited that certain general criteria and principles can guide library users in their quest for meaningful engagement with literature.

Professor Ge contended that effective reading practices should be tailored to the specific objectives of each library user. He delineated two primary purposes for reading: the instrumental use of books as tools and the pursuit of personal enrichment and fulfilment. Intriguingly, he emphasized the necessity of distinguishing between these aims and adapting distinct methods and requirements accordingly.

Moreover, Professor Ge elucidated the significance of making discerning choices while navigating the reading process, considering personal circumstances and reading goals. He advocated for the deliberate selection of knowledge domains and stages of learning that align with individual needs. Additionally, he underscored the importance of extensive reading, particularly for scholarly research endeavours, in order to acquire comprehensive insights and perspectives.

In his closing remarks, Professor Ge voiced his aspiration for the progress of human society, urging a reduction in the proportion of utilitarian reading. He advocated for allocating ample time to nurture our spiritual lives, as he believed that this would yield the greatest sense of fulfilment and happiness derived from reading.
