Wenzhou, October 23–25, 2025 — Hosted by Wenzhou-Kean University, the 2025 Sino-Foreign Joint Venture University Library Annual Conference was held in Wenzhou. Under the theme “Innovation, Challenges, and Opportunities: Development Pathways for Future Sino-Foreign University Libraries,” the conference brought together leaders and experts from numerous Sino-foreign joint venture university libraries, internationally renowned universities, and industry organizations to engage in in-depth discussions on topics such as librarian leadership development, digital innovation, AI applications, open science, and academic support services.

A delegation of seven staff members from the Library of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen), led by Director Ge Jianxiong and Deputy Director Helen Wang, attended the conference. During keynote speeches and roundtable discussions, the library representatives gained valuable insights into the latest trends in digital transformation, the development of open research platforms, and interdisciplinary collaboration within academic libraries, while actively contributing to onsite exchange sessions.

In the themed session “Cultivating Library Leadership: Global Perspectives,” four library directors from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, the University of Minnesota Libraries, the University of Connecticut Library, and the Macau University of Science and Technology shared their experiences and reflections on nurturing the next generation of library leaders across diverse cultural contexts. Drawing from participation in programs such as the Chinese Advanced Library Leadership Program, the Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians, and the ARL Leadership Fellows Program, the speakers explored the core competencies and developmental pathways required for library leaders in a rapidly changing environment, providing valuable reference for talent development and leadership enhancement in our library.
In the parallel sessions held on the afternoon of October 24, our librarians participated in specialized discussions on resource acquisition strategies, AI applications in library IT services, and AI literacy requirements for librarian recruitment in the new era. A general consensus emerged: in the age of AI, the work of librarians will not be replaced by AI, but may be taken over by a new generation of librarians proficient in AI skills. Given current resources and technological conditions, libraries may not yet be able to offer comprehensive “AI library services” directly; however, they should actively explore pathways for “using AI to provide better services,” enhancing service quality by strengthening librarians' capabilities in intelligent retrieval, data analysis, and information visualization — thereby offering more precise and efficient support for faculty and student research and learning.

The conference not only served as a platform for cross-cultural exchange among Sino-foreign joint venture university libraries, but also offered valuable inspiration for our library’s strategic planning in digital innovation and AI application. Moving forward, the Library of CUHK-Shenzhen will seize this opportunity to deepen collaboration with domestic and international institutions, promote technological and service model innovation, and continuously enhance academic support capabilities and user satisfaction.
