Shenzhen, October 29, 2025 — The Library of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen hosted the fourth session of the Myriad Tomes Symposium, a book-sharing series organized by its Subject Services Division. Launched in December 2024, the program aims to cultivate good reading habits among participants, broaden perspectives, expand knowledge, and promote thoughtful values.
本期读书会邀请了香港中文大学(深圳)公共政策学院卫然副教授,主讲主题为《World Heritage Craze in China: Universal Discourse, National Culture, and Local Memory》,作者为闫海明。
The session featured Dr. Wei Ran from the School of Public Policy, who discussed World Heritage Craze in China: Universal Discourse, National Culture, and Local Memory, authored by Haiming Yan. Dr. Wei began by outlining the global World Heritage system, China’s participation in it, and related debates and controversies. He then provided an overview of the book, covering the author’s background, central research questions, structure, and key arguments, with particular emphasis on critical heritage studies.
Case studies in the book—Fujian Tulou, Mount Songshan, and the Great Wall—were analyzed to illustrate the complexities of heritage preservation and its local impact. The lecture concluded with a call for careful reassessment of the surge in World Heritage designations in China, underscoring its academic and practical significance.
In the Q&A session, participants engaged Dr. Wei in an in-depth discussion on the broader role of cultural heritage in national development, with attention to economic and strategic dimensions relevant to China’s future position in the global arena.
